NHU AFRICA initiatives include the Wild Talk Africa film festival and conference, which attracts the global wildlife filmmaking industry, the Wildlife Film Academy, which trains students in wildlife filmmaking and exhibiting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year

The most prestigious wildlife photography exhibition in the world is proudly brought to South Africa each year by NHU Africain partnership with Iziko Museum. This exhibition captures emotive images of endangered species as well as awe-inspiring shots of the wildest places on Earth.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition is now open.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2011 Exhibition jointly owned by the Natural History Museum in London and the BBC Wildlife Magazine has been running almost 50 years. The competition has established itself as an international leader in the artistic representation of the natural world and it attracts tens of thousands of entries every year. This year photographs were received from 41000 photographers in over 95 countries.

The 2011 exhibition represent the work of 79 photographers from 24 countries. They were selected from 41,000 entries, representing 95 countries, and chosen by an international panel of judges for their artistic merit, but the range of natural subjects represented is huge and the styles diverse.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition will be showcased from 7 December 2011 – 7 March 2011 at the Iziko South African Museum, 25 Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town (next to the Planetarium). Opening hours are 10h00 – 17h00, seven days a week. Entrance fee is R15 per adult, R5 for students and pensioners, and access for 18 and under is free.

The Festival targets over 500 delegates in the wildlife film industry who meet to debate current issues facing the industry, negotiate business opportunities and showcase a variety of international and local films and product. Delegates attend from all over the world and include international broadcasters; Animal Planet International, BBC NHU, NHK (Japan’s Broadcasting Corporation), National Geographic, and local broadcasters; e.tv, and SABC, as well as wildlife filmmakers, distributors, producers and newcomers to the industry.

Wildlife Film Academy

If you are passionate about wildlife, if you have a desire to learn more about wildlife filmmaking and would like to develop your career as a wildlife filmmaker then this intensive one month course offered by the Wildlife Film Academy is for you – inspire yourself!

The Wildlife Film Academy operates a globally unique one month wildlife filmmaking course, in South Africa, developed by international, experienced and award-winning wildlife filmmakers. It seeks to inspire and inform aspiring filmmakers and provide a variety of skills essential to making original and appealing wildlife films.
